Teaism - The Art of Tea as a Way of Life

Origins of Teaism

The philosophy of Teaism originated in Japan during the late 19th century.  It reflects a simple but profound idea that tea is so much more than a beverage.

Okakura Kakuzō, a Japanese scholar, first introduced the term Teaism in his famous book The Book of Tea (1906). He described it as the art of appreciating beauty in everyday moments.

Teaism is rooted in Zen and Taoist thought, where small rituals—like preparing and sharing tea—become acts of mindfulness.

Key Ideas in Teaism

  • Simplicity: Teaism values the quiet beauty of ordinary things. A plain teacup, a gentle pour, or the sound of water boiling all have their own charm.

  • Harmony: Sharing tea creates a sense of connection and respect between host and guest.

  • Mindfulness: Preparing and drinking tea slowly invites us to pause and savour the moment.

  • Imperfection: In Teaism, there is beauty in the rustic and the imperfect—a cracked teapot, a slightly uneven glaze.

Teaism Today - a gentle and calming approach to your daily tea

You don’t need a formal tea ceremony to embrace Teaism. It can be as simple as:

  • Making time each day to brew your tea slowly and with intention.

  • Choosing teaware you love, even if it’s mismatched.

  • Sharing a pot of tea and conversation with a friend
